What Is Shockwave Therapy?
Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) is a non-invasive treatment that delivers high-energy acoustic pressure waves to injured tissue. These waves stimulate blood flow, encourage the body's natural healing response, and help break down scar tissue and calcium deposits. It is particularly effective for chronic tendon problems that have not responded to rest, exercise, or other treatments, and is recommended by NICE for a number of stubborn tendon conditions.
Each session takes around 30 minutes, including assessment and rehabilitation advice. Treatment can be a little uncomfortable but is well tolerated, and you can return to normal daily activities straight away.
Conditions Shockwave Can Treat
- •Plantar fasciitis (heel pain)
- •Achilles tendinopathy
- •Tennis elbow and golfer's elbow
- •Calcific shoulder tendinopathy
- •Patellar tendinopathy (jumper's knee)
- •Greater trochanteric pain syndrome (outer hip pain)
- •Shin splints (medial tibial stress syndrome)
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
Most conditions respond best to a course of 3 to 6 sessions, spaced roughly one week apart. Many people notice an improvement after the first couple of sessions, but the full benefit typically develops over the weeks following the course as the tissue continues to heal.
At your first appointment I will assess your condition and confirm whether shockwave is suitable for you. Treatment is always combined with a tailored rehabilitation programme to get the best long-term results.
